Course Notes:

HOLE 1: Par 4 (Downhill, Dogleg Left) A welcoming handshake, but don’t go left. • Scenario A (Par): Hit Driver favored to the right-center. The hill kicks everything left. A 235-yard drive leaves you a Sand Wedge (100y) or PW (115y) in. Aim for the center of the green; don’t chase a tucked pin. • Scenario B (Birdie): Hit Driver aggressively down the right side to catch the speed slot. This leaves a 30-80y SW pitch. Attack the pin, but stay below the hole. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: Left edge of the fairway. • If it Slices: You land center cut. • If it goes Straight: You are in the left rough, which is better than the vineyards on the right. The hill helps hold a straight ball from going too far left. HOLE 2: Par 4 (Short, Sharp Dogleg Right) Position over power. • Scenario A (Par): Do NOT hit Driver. Hit your 3-Iron (200-210y) or 4-Iron straight out. You only need 200 yards to the corner. This leaves a 9-iron or PW approach. • Scenario B (Birdie): Same tee shot. The risk of Driver running through the fairway is too high. Birdie comes from sticking your 140y 9-iron close. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: The big tree on the far left corner. • If it Slices: You cut the corner perfectly. • If it goes Straight: You run through the fairway into the rough/bunkers, but you have a clear shot. Do not aim right; the trees block you out. HOLE 3: Par 3 (Steep Uphill) Plays 1-2 clubs longer than the number. • Scenario A (Par): Yardage says 145y, but it plays 165y. Hit your 6-iron (170y) smooth. Short is dead in the bunker. • Scenario B (Birdie): Hit 7-iron (160y) hard. You want to land just past the pin to use the backstop, but don’t spin it off the front. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: Center of the green. • If it Slices: You catch the right fringe. • If it goes Straight: You are on the green. This is a wide green; don’t over-borrow. HOLE 4: Par 4 (Tight, Vineyards on both sides) The “Thread the Needle” hole. • Scenario A (Par): Hitting Driver is risky. Hit 3-iron (210y) off the tee. This leaves you about 150-160y in. Hit your 7-iron or 8-iron to the center. • Scenario B (Birdie): Hitting Driver here is the only way to get a wedge in hand, but the vineyards eat balls right. Only pull Driver if you are feeling confident. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: The left cart path. • If it Slices: Beautiful fade into the fairway. • If it goes Straight: You are near the left cart path/native area. Better than the deep vines on the right. HOLE 5: Par 5 (Uphill, Split Fairway) A massive ravine protects the green. • Scenario A (Par): Driver to the fairway. Second shot: Do NOT try to be a hero. Hit 7-iron just to lay up to the flat spot before the ravine. Third shot: PW or SW onto the green. • Scenario B (Birdie): Driver up the right side. Second shot: Hit 4-iron (190y) or 3-iron to carry the ravine if you have a good lie. If you clear it, easy chip for birdie. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: Left side of the fairway bunker. • If it Slices: You land safe right-center. • If it goes Straight: You are in the bunker, but that’s better than the vines right. HOLE 6: Par 4 (Slight Dogleg Left) Generally flat compared to the rest. • Scenario A (Par): Driver down the right-center. Leaves a 7-iron (160y) approach. Middle of the green. • Scenario B (Birdie): Driver aggressive line hugging the left trees (risky). Leaves an 8-iron or 9-iron. Go pin seeking. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: The 150-yard stake in the middle. • If it Slices: You are in the right rough (safe). • If it goes Straight: Perfect. • Note: Do not aim too far left here; trees will block your second shot. HOLE 7: Par 3 (Downhill) Beautiful, swirling wind. • Scenario A (Par): Plays shorter. If it’s 155y, hit your 8-iron (150y). Let it release. • Scenario B (Birdie): Take the same club but aim for the “fat” part of the green. Birdies here are made with the putter, not the iron. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: Left edge of the green. • If it Slices: Center green. • If it goes Straight: Left fringe/bunker. The right drop-off is dead. HOLE 8: Par 5 (The Uphill Grind) Just keep climbing. • Scenario A (Par): Driver. Second shot: 5-iron (180y) up the hill. Third shot: SW (100y). Do not miss long; the green slopes back-to-front severely. • Scenario B (Birdie): Requires two monster shots. Driver + 3-iron. Not recommended unless you have wind help. Stick to the 3-shot strategy and try to stick the wedge close. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: Left rough line. • If it Slices: Fairway. • If it goes Straight: Left rough. The fairway slopes left-to-right, so a slice will roll into the junk on the right. HOLE 9: Par 4 (Uphill Approach) Finish the front strong. • Scenario A (Par): Driver. The approach plays +10 yards uphill. If you have 150y, hit your 6-iron (170y) or hard 7-iron. • Scenario B (Birdie): Drive must be perfect. Approach must stay below the hole. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: Left Fairway Bunker. • If it Slices: Perfect fairway. • If it goes Straight: Bunker. (Better than the right drop-off). HOLE 10: Par 4 (The Signature Drop) Huge elevation drop. 250 yards carries the corner but runs out. • Scenario A (Par): 3-Iron (210y) off the tee. Aim at the bunker in the distance. The ball will stay in the air forever and roll out to 230-240. Leaves a 9-iron/8-iron in. • Scenario B (Birdie): Driver high cut over the right trees? No. Too risky. Hit Driver straight at the bunker. If you catch it, you have a SW (50y) in. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: The Bunker straight ahead. • If it Slices: You cut the corner and have a wedge in. • If it goes Straight: You are safe in the fairway/bunker. HOLE 11: Par 4 (Uphill, Technical) Don’t be fooled by the yardage. • Scenario A (Par): Driver. Second shot plays uphill. Add a club. Hit 6-iron (170y) if you think it’s 160. • Scenario B (Birdie): Drive must challenge the right fairway bunker to open up the angle. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: Left side of the fairway. • If it Slices: Center. • If it goes Straight: Left rough (safe). Right is native grass/dead. HOLE 12: Par 5 (Downhill, Reachable?) Let the big dog eat. • Scenario A (Par): Driver down the left side (slope kicks right). 3-iron (200y) layup. SW on. • Scenario B (Birdie): Driver down the left. If you get the roll, you have 200y in (downhill). Hit 4-iron onto the front edge. Eagle possibility. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: The cart path on the left. • If it Slices: Huge drive down the middle. • If it goes Straight: You are in the left rough/mounds. The ball will kick right. HOLE 13: Par 4 (Dogleg Left) Blind tee shot. • Scenario A (Par): 3-iron or 4-iron off the tee to the corner. Do not run through the fairway. Leaves a 7-iron. • Scenario B (Birdie): Driver high draw? No, you play a slice. Stick to the iron off the tee and hit the approach close. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: Aim far right? No, right is dead. You have to aim center and accept that a slice puts you in the right rough. • Adjustment: Club down to 5-iron off the tee. A shorter club slices less. Keep it in play. HOLE 14: Par 3 (The View) Drop off to the right. • Scenario A (Par): Hit 6-iron (170y) aiming at the left-center of the green. • Scenario B (Birdie): Hit 7-iron (160y) if the pin is front. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: Left fringe. • If it Slices: You are on the green. • If it goes Straight: Chip from the left. Right is a canyon. HOLE 15: Par 4 (Tight Approach) The road hole (sort of). • Scenario A (Par): Driver. Approach is usually into the wind now. Take one extra club (6-iron instead of 7-iron). • Scenario B (Birdie): Drive must favor the right side to open up the green angle. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: Left rough. • If it Slices: Center. • If it goes Straight: Left rough is playable. HOLE 16: Par 3 (Short) Don’t get lazy. • Scenario A (Par): 9-iron (140y) or 8-iron. Middle of the green. • Scenario B (Birdie): Attack the pin only if it’s center/back. Front pins suck balls off the false front. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: Left trap. • If it Slices: Green. • If it goes Straight: Bunker. (Better than short/right). HOLE 17: Par 4 (Longer) Hold on for dear life. • Scenario A (Par): Driver. You need the distance here. Second shot is likely a 4-iron or 5-iron. Aim for the fat of the green. • Scenario B (Birdie): Honestly, take a Par here and run. It’s a birdie on the scorecard relative to the field. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: Left edge of the fairway. • If it Slices: Fairway. • If it goes Straight: Left rough. The right side falls off. HOLE 18: Par 5 (Into the Wind, Water Threat) The grand finale. A creek splits the fairway. • Scenario A (Par): Driver. Second shot: Check the yardage to the creek. If it’s 200y to the water, hit 5-iron (180y) to lay up short. Third shot: PW (130y) over the water to the green. • Scenario B (Birdie): Driver. If you crush it, you can try to carry the creek with a 3-wood (which you don’t carry) or a hard 3-iron. It’s safer to lay up and stick the wedge. • Scenario C (The Slicer): • Aim Point: Left rough. • If it Slices: Fairway. • If it goes Straight: Left rough. The wind will exaggerate your slice here, so aim further left than you think. Caddy’s Final Notes for You: 1. The “Slicer” Rule: On this course, the trouble is almost always on the right (slope, vineyards, drop-offs). Aiming at the left rough line is your safety net on 14 of the 18 holes. 2. The “Wente Wind”: On holes 15, 17, and 18, if the wind is in your face, club up two clubs. Do not try to swing harder; swing smoother with more club. 3. Greens: They break away from the hills. If you are confused, look at the biggest mountain; the ball breaks away from it.
