Vibe Notes: “Plane-Spotter’s” Range: Located directly adjacent to the Oakland International Airport (OAK), the atmosphere is defined by low-flying aircraft and the sound of jet engines. Casual & Accessible: Reviewers on Yelp describe the vibe as flat, casual, and beginner-friendly, though it can get crowded and slow during peak times. Exposed & Windy: As a links-style course, the range is wide open with few trees, making it highly susceptible to strong bay winds that add a layer of challenge to practice. Elite Practice Spot: The facility is the home practice ground for the Cal Golden Bears golf team, lending it a certain “serious golfer” credibility despite its public, muni feel. Grass Hitting Area: The standout feature is the large grass range, which many prefer over rubber mats for realistic feedback. Note that it occasionally switches to mats on Tuesdays for maintenance. Short Game Area: There is a dedicated, paid short game area that includes a chipping green and bunker, often cited as being in better condition than the course itself. Conditions: While the range is praised, the general course conditions receive mixed reviews, with some users on Greenskeeper.org noting patchy fairways and unkept tee boxes.

Your First Visit (Step-by-Step)

Parking
Step 1) Location: The Metropolitan Golf Links has a large, dedicated free surface lot directly in front of the clubhouse. Step 2) Arrival: Drive into the main entrance at 10051 Doolittle Drive. The parking lot is wheelchair accessible and rarely fills to capacity except during large tournaments. Tip: Park closer to the left side (as you face the clubhouse) for the shortest walk to the driving range stalls.
You have two main options for getting your bucket, but note that ball sales stop 30 minutes before sunset. Option A: The Golf Shop (Recommended for Newcomers) Step 1A) Walk into the main clubhouse and enter the Golf Shop. Step 2A) Purchase your desired bucket size at the counter: Small, Medium, Large Step 3A) The staff will provide you with a PIN code or a token. Step 4A) Walk out to the ball dispenser (located just outside the clubhouse near the range entrance) and enter your code to release the balls. Option B: The Outdoor Dispenser Step 1B) Go directly to the ball dispenser machine. Step 2B) Use a Credit Card, Debit Card, or NFC mobile payment (Apple/Google Pay) directly at the machine for a faster “scan and go” experience. Note: This machine generally does not accept cash; cash users must go through the Golf Shop
dispenser
Step 1) The Layout: The range features 36–37 stalls arranged in a single line. Step 2) Natural Grass vs. Mats: Normal Days: You will stand directly on the natural grass hitting area. There are usually ropes or markers indicating the “hitting line” for that day. – Tuesdays & Rain: The range utilizes mats on Tuesdays (closed for maintenance until 9:00 AM) and during extremely rainy weather. Step 3) Finding a Spot: Stalls are first-come, first-served. Step 4) Walk down the line until you find an open area marked by the alignment ropes.
