Course Notes: Course Difficulty Notes Hardest Aspects: ---Hole #7 (The Signature Challenge): The #1 handicap hole plays 391 yards from the Blue tees as a sharp dogleg right over a lake that's also shared by hole #8. This hole demands both length and accuracy, forcing players to navigate the water hazard while positioning for the approach shot.--- Hole #2 (Most Technical): Described as the most difficult on the course, this hole features a lateral hazard along the right side and a tree immediately to the left of the tee box, creating a very narrow window for tee shots, especially when tees are positioned far left.--- Water Everywhere: With creeks and ponds coming into play on 15 of 18 holes, water hazards are the course's defining characteristic and primary defense. Mother Nature makes Cherry Island a true challenge even for experienced golfers.--- Large Undulating Greens: The greens at Cherry Island are described as fast (rated "hecka fast" by recent reviewers) with significant undulation, making three-putts common if you're on the wrong tier.--- Precision Required: This is a target-style golf course where placement matters more than power. Poor shots are penalized, and spraying the ball will lead to frustration.-------------------------------------- Easiest Aspects:--- Short Par 3s: All four par 3s play under 180 yards from the back tees, making them reachable with mid to short irons.--- Driveable Par 4s: Holes #1 and #18 are short par 4s (around 341 yards) that longer hitters can potentially drive, offering birdie opportunities to start and finish the round.--- Lay-up Friendly: For short hitters, the course offers numerous lay-up opportunities, particularly on holes with water hazards. Smart course management (180-200 yard lay-ups to avoid creeks) can keep scores respectable.--- Wide Fairways on Select Holes: While many fairways are tree-lined, several holes feature generous landing areas that provide recovery options even after wayward tee shots.--- Fair Design: Despite its challenges, the course has "no trick holes or gimmicks" and rewards good shots while fairly penalizing poor ones.---

Description

Cherry Island Golf Course is a premier public 18-hole championship golf course located in Elverta, California, approximately 20 minutes north of downtown Sacramento. Designed by the legendary golf course architect Robert Muir Graves and opened on June 1, 1990, this stunning layout has earned a reputation as one of Northern California’s best-maintained and most challenging municipal courses.

The course derives its name from the island formed by the confluence of the north and south forks of Dry Creek and the grove of cherry trees that once flourished there. Originally an underdeveloped floodplain purchased by Sacramento County in 1986, the 170-acre property was transformed into a golf paradise that incorporates 22 acres of riparian forests, heritage blue oak woodlands, native grasslands, and vernal pools restored to their natural conditions.
